USA Ultimate Southwest Women’s Regionals | Scottsdale, AZ
September 28-29, 2013
The Gamemakers presented us with impressive accommodations for regionals, putting us up in spacious condos with king size beds for every Nightlocker and full kitchens. Unfortunately, there was no lamb stew with dried apricots; they are, of course, saving that for the Quarter Quell.
Our first game of the day was against the Bay Area’s newest team, Tempo. As always, Tempo’s tributes–specifically their tall receivers–gave us a strong fight, but we pulled out ahead with a 13-7 win. After settling into our Nightlock flow, we felt faster and more energized–but not enough to take down the #1 seed, who ended up beating us 7-13. With the sun at its highest and temperatures pushing the mid-90s, we rehydrated to face Venom, an Arizona-based team. With a final score of 13-2, we used this game to perfect our defenses and get some O-on-D lines in! Our final game was against Los Angeles Viva. After going down two breaks, we refocused to take back the game, winning 13-5.
After watching our local Bay Area men’s teams, Revolver and Boost, play out their final games, we headed to our resort’s pool to grill and cool down. It was unexpectedly Thud’s birthday, so we celebrated with already-eaten cookies. Exhausted Nightlockers headed back to the condos to ice our legs in what were probably the most boring ice baths of all time.
We woke up early on Sunday morning for our last pool play game against Safari, knowing that we would likely face them again in the second game-to-go. Their zone-y/junky wall gave us trouble at first, but after minutes of dump-swinging, we were able to repeatedly break the disc through, leading us to a 9-6 win. We met Fury again in the finals, but fell behind: congratulations to Fury for a 15-5 finals win! Prepared to face Safari again, who had just fought Viva for a 13-9 win through the back door, we refueled and talked strategy. After blowing through our nerves in the first few points, we settled into our stride and finished 14-9. For the second year in a row, Nightlock has deservedly been selected as tributes and will be headed to the arena in Frisco for Nationals on October 17-20.
As always, the arena will be a surprise, but we’re training for everything, including Texas-sized force fields. Practice will likely involve running through acid fog, scrimmaging Monkey Muttations, and playing amongst Jabberjays, who imitate the screams of our lost coach, Jit.
