Cal States Tournament | Santa Cruz, California
June 2 -3, 2012
The struggle for a new team name is finally over. As we arrived at the fields Saturday morning the vote was between Nightlock and Bridge Club, with several people heavily pressuring teammates to “make the right choice”. They, of course, did and we are now Nightlock! Thank god for that because even Jit didn’t think he’d be able to cheer for Bridge Club.
Our first game was not only the first of the tournament, but also our first official game as a team. You know what they say, you always remember your first time. We started off pumped up and excited to see how we would do against our regional competitor, Safari. For a while we traded O points until we got a few breaks and never looked back. Between Pebbles getting yelled at by someone who I’m pretty sure just joined the "I'm not yelling, this is how i always talk" facebook group, Waugh (who has not grown more than 6 inches since she was three) skying people, making up cheers to the tune of "Pop, Lock, and Drop It", and coming together to win our first game it’s unlikely that we could have had a better start to our season.
Still pumped from the game before, we went to on defeat the new Tahoe women’s team and LA Revolution to become the only undefeated team in the state of California!
It is important to note that between games a pulling contest took place to see who might end up being a puller this season. As you can see from our twitter, we have quite a few finalists, but to be clear Marie was quoted saying, “I don’t want to be a puller, I just like winning” so please do not be confused by her presence in the posted picture.
Having heard about our undefeated season, frightened future competitors, Fury sent a spy to our team meeting Saturday night. Luckily, we were onto her tricks and injected her with tracker jacker venom, but spirit of the game got the best of us so we let her sleep it off upstairs for a few hours. A live feed of the meeting can be found on our twitter page.
We came out strong Sunday morning in our first game against Fury, but sadly ended our huge winning streak. Next we went on to defeat The Capitol (Sol’s pseudonym) and accidentally ended up cheering for ourselves at the end of the game as we tried to make another Hunger Games reference - something we will surely improve on as the season continues. With this win we placed second in our pool and went on to play Fury again in finals.
Once again, we came out on fire and went up two breaks. Though we didn’t score much more after that, the game lasted an impressive hour and a half.
Overall, we had an amazing first tournament filled with bonding, crying (read the twitter feed), and some great ultimate.
