Labor Day Ultimate Championships (Elite/Select) | Santa Cruz, CA
August 31-September 1, 2013
The Gamemakers were in a fine mood last weekend and designed an arena that most teams would envy. The beautiful fields over the ocean in Santa Cruz played host to our last tournament of the regular season. We came out strong, winning our first two games against Jackwagon, 15-3, and Further, 15-4, before gearing up to face Safari, a regional rival we know well. The game was hard fought, and we lost a tribute along the way, but we pulled out a 15-9 victory.
Saturday night was full of ice and revelry as we prepared to face new rivals on Sunday. We started the morning against Tempo, the newest team in the Bay Area. It was a great, hard, spirited game, and the 15-3 score does not reflect the skill of that up and coming team. In semis against Pop we turned on the fire and managed a 15-6 victory before facing Schwa in the finals. We knew that would be a great game, since we had barely eked out a win in our previous meeting at Solstice. Despite our taking a sizeable lead of 10-5, Schwa was able to fight back with some hard force middle D and sheer force of will to steal the game 12-11.
Sunday evening, we learned that a beach house meant for 8 can really fit 30, that certain bouncers are not super discerning, and that Waugh really, really likes dancing.
With Regionals up next, we’re headed back to our districts to train harder than ever. Follow us on twitter as we gear up for our biggest challenge of the year.
